BulletProof Gear

What is BulletProof Gear?

The term “BulletProof Gear” refers to a wide range of products designed to absorb the energy of high-speed objects (such as bullets or shrapnel) and reduce impact energy to a non-lethal level for the human body. At IDS, we specialize in personal ballistic protection. Our extensive ballistic product line includes a variety of vests, helmets, glasses, armor plates, bags, and other protective clothing.

How Ballistic Protection Levels are Measured

Ballistic protection levels are classified through an international standard created by the NIJ (National Institute of Justice). The NIJ standard measures the durability of protective material against threats based on bullet caliber and penetration capability.

Common Protection Levels:

  • Protection Level IIA – Designed to absorb 9mm and .40 S&W caliber bullets fired from short-barrel handguns.
  • Protection Level IIIA – Designed to absorb bullets up to .357 SIG and .44 MAGNUM calibers, fired from longer-barrel handguns. This is the most common “soft” armor level, often made of Kevlar layers. Commonly used by police, security personnel, and civilians under threat from 9mm handguns or submachine guns.
  • Protection Level III – Designed to absorb bullets up to 7.62mm NATO FMJ with a lead core. Commonly used in Israel to address 5.56 caliber threats. Level III armor is hard armor (plates), different from soft armor (vests).
  • Protection Level IV – The highest level of personal ballistic protection, capable of absorbing bullets up to 30mm, including steel-core bullets and armor-piercing rounds. Commonly used in Israel for threats from various AK-47 rifles and 7.62 caliber rounds. Level IV protection is also hard armor, referring to armor plates rather than soft armor like vests.

How to Choose your Gear?

It is a known fact that the first thing one needs when SH*T hits the fan – it protection

As with any tactical personal equipment, it’s essential to understand the intended purpose of the gear, the threats it should protect against, and the missions it will serve. Ballistic gear is lifesaving but relatively heavy, so it’s crucial to choose the appropriate protection level for the threat in your area.

For example, a police officer who wears protective gear all day and faces a 9mm handgun threat likely wouldn’t choose Level IV armor (against AK-47s), which is heavier, less flexible, and less comfortable for daily wear. Conversely, a soldier in areas with prevalent AK-47 threats wouldn’t opt for Level IIIA soft armor, which is lighter and more comfortable but doesn’t protect against 7.62mm rounds.

When choosing a helmet or any protective clothing item, it’s also essential to consider material quality, sweat-wicking properties, and resistance to damage from time, weather, and extensive use.
