IDF Watch – Unit Symbols

Israel Defense Forces

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), commonly called Tzahal (צה״ל‬) in Israel, serve as the military forces of the State of Israel. They include the ground forces, air force, and navy. The Chief of General Staff, known as the Ramatkal, leads the IDF and reports directly to the Defense Minister of Israel. The IDF stands out from most armed forces worldwide in several ways. These include mandatory conscription for women and a structure that fosters close collaboration between the army, navy, and air force.

Israeli Air Force

The Israeli Air Force operates as the aerial warfare branch of the Israel Defense Forces. It was founded on May 28, 1948, shortly after the Israeli Declaration of Independence.

“Golani” Brigade

The 1st “Golani” Brigade (Hebrew: חֲטִיבַת גּוֹלָנִי‬) is an Israeli regular service infantry brigade that is subordinated to the 36th Division and traditionally associated with the Northern Command.
It is one of the five regular service infantry brigades of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Its symbol is a green olive tree against a yellow background, with its soldiers wearing a brown beret. Early Golani soldiers were farmers and new immigrants, so the strong connection to the land (earth) was important to honor. For this reason, Golani’s soldiers are designated by brown berets; the brown color symbolizing the brigade’s connection with the soil of the Land of Israel. It is one of the most highly decorated infantry units in the IDF.

Israeli Navy

The Israeli Navy is the naval warfare service arm of the Israel Defense Forces. It operates primarily in the Mediterranean Sea theater; moreover, it extends its presence to the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea theater. As a result, it plays a crucial role in securing Israel’s maritime borders and maintaining regional stability.

Paratroopers Brigade

The 35th Brigade (Hebrew: חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים‬, Hativat HaTzanhanim), also known as the Paratroopers Brigade, is an infantry brigade unit of paratroopers within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and forms a major part of the Infantry Corps. Moreover, it has a rich history of carrying out special forces-style missions dating back to the 1950s. Paratrooper Brigade soldiers, for instance, wear maroon berets with the infantry pin and reddish-brown boots. In addition, distinct from all other soldiers of the IDF, Paratroopers wear a tunic and belt over the shirt.
